Clicker Training
Started By
Hello people of Alacrity. I felt like this was the best place to go to. I have my four year old maltese who has been deemed untrainable by my family. We are NOT going to be spending any money on puppy training/obediance.

So what did I do? I bought a clicker with some small treats.

What does my dog know already?
His name.
Sit.
Somewhat knows shake.
Somewhat knows lay down.
I do belive he knows to "come" but we don't have a large enough space to practice this again.

I did a half hour of training today which just was me introducing the clicker and the reward system. He learned rather quickly. And he's VERY excitable so he went straight into yelping and jumping mode. I began to begin the "sit" exercises. Since he already knows how to sit, I just reinforced the treat system. Eventually, he waited for me calmly instead of jumping around.

Are there any more specific steps I need to take to make the training more effiecient?

I'm hoping to start "down" next once he manages to learn that when he's going to be presented with a treat to calm down and stop barking.

And then after that I'm hoping to do "come" or "stay."

Thank you! :)

You sems to be doing pretty good with him, little tip for the down trick though; if he doesn't want to go down, sit on the floor with your back straight, maybe lean against a wall to keep yoursefl upright. Don't put you feet infront of yoj or cross you legs, instead, place your feet flat on the ground and slowly draw them up until you've got an unsidedown V shape, coax your dog under your legs and slowly move your feet forward, flattening the v shape, he should lau down to stop himself being squished (it's not an inhumane trick XP )) and click him when he's down and treat :3

yayy!! :D He is learning that if he speaks when YOU tell him to, he gets rewarded.. but doesn't get rewarded when he speaks by himself

I learned this trick from a dog book. A woman was working with an aggressive dog who snapped/growled a lot, she started teaching him to growl/snap on command and he stopped doing it to people

Did a training session of "speak' and it worked really well!

He realized that I on;y want him to bark when I asked him to. Of course, I need to continue with the training because he often regresses and I don't want him to with this, but it's going well! :D

ahh thank you!

I never actually thought about using his barking as a trick only because we focus solely on getting him to shut his mouth xD

If tha works out, we'll have a much quieter household and I don't think I could thank you enough o.o

When I did the "sit" training with him, haf were with treats and the other half were him being pet (he loves being pet as a reward and I didn't want to overload his excited tummy with treats otherwise puke will ensure xD) .

But I definitely think I should work on "speak"

Try turning the natural behaviours (barking and jumping) into commands that he will do when told instead of whenever like a hooligan.
Try teaching him "speak" and maybe "sit pretty" instead of jumping right up like a kangaroo lol.

Clicker training is helpful because you are able to mold your dog's negative behaviours into tricks :D Just keep at it and remember that EVERY click MUST result immediately in a treat, or you will send the progress reeling backwards.

"Come" would be helpful if you placed him at one end of the yard and told him "come" and clicked as he was coming over. Clicker training is based on rewarding as soon as the dog does the requested trick, but this isn't really possible with a dog that is all the way across the yard, so click-click-click-treat as the dog comes across the yard :)

(Fun fact: clicker training originated as whistles by dolphin trainers to "click" (whistle) when the dolphin performed the correct leap, because it was not possible for the dolphin trainer to reward the dolphin at the time of the jump, but instead, tell the dolphin that the trick was correct through a whistle, and then to come to the side for a treat)
